Etihad Airways launches home Covid-19 PCR testing service

Initiative aims to boost passenger confidence and speed transit at destination airports

Etihad Airways has launched an at home Covid-19 testing service to aid passenger safety and facilitate smoother airport journeys.

The polymerase chain reaction-based (PCR) test is being performed in partnership with Mediclinic Middle East and made available to travellers from the UAE, Etihad confirmed.

The initiative was the latest component in Etihad’s’ Wellness sanitisation and safety programme in response to Covid-19, the company said.

Nadia Bastaki, Vice President Medical Services, Etihad Airways, said: “We have a paramount responsibility to ensure those who are travelling from Abu Dhabi can do so assured in the knowledge that every effort is being made to care for them at every stage of their journey. Enabling home PCR testing will remove much unnecessary stress from the travel experience during this challenging period.”

PCR tests work by detecting the presence of viral RNA. This material is present before the body’s immune response is active, which allows the test to spot someone with the virus before they display symptoms.

Some destinations served by Etihad required a PCR test result before granting travellers entry, the airline said.

Customers can access the test either at home or by visiting a Mediclinic facility, Etihad said.

Upon passing the test, passengers receive a printed copy and are free to head for check-in at the airport.
