GHI reviews the latest Covid-19 data released by the World Health Organization, governments and aviation analysts over the past week. Which countries have seen a rapid rise in cases? Are there areas where the pandemic is starting to plateau and what does that tell us?

India continues its troubling rise up the league table of worst hit coronavirus countries in the world this week. The country has recorded more than 50,000 confirmed cases in seven days taking it to seventh in the overall rankings and India the only Asian nation in the top 10. As India is reporting more than 8,000 positive cases a day – it would seem a bizarre time to lift lockdown restrictions. However, that’s exactly what the Indian Government announced last Saturday.

Powers to enforce lockdown measures have been devolved to local states in a move believed to be guided by economic rather than scientific rationale. The records read India entered lockdown with 519 confirmed cases and 10 deaths and left it with 173,000 confirmed cases and 4,971 deaths.

Peru has joined Brazil as the second South American country to appear in the top 10 countries by confirmed cases. Peru is closing in on 200,000 infected citizens despite implementing an early lockdown by President Martín Vizcarra. The escalation in cases has been caused by people flouting much of the guidance according to analysts as well as the efficacy of the country’s testing regime.

The US is approaching the two millionth confirmed coronavirus case in the next few weeks with economists warning the virus could wipe $8trillion from economic growth.

Brighter news across the pond where Italy continues to report miniscule levels of confirmed cases and fatalities compared to its peak. There were 55 deaths and 318 fresh cases on 2 June.

Germany has lifted its travel warning for Europe this week though it remains in force for the rets of the world. Meanwhile, the UK’s Covid-19 death toll has exceeded 50,000.

To finish on some positives. New Zealand has recorded 11 days of no new coronavirus cases and could lift travel restrictions next week. And a US army scientist is tipping a Covid-19 vaccine to be available before the end of 2020 as part of a joint project between the White House and the private sector.
